Dear Prime Minister,

Kia Ora, I am writing to you because I think you need to know about our brilliant “Garden To Table” program we have here at Owairaka District School in Mt Albert.

Owairaka School is an multicultural Enviro School, one of our enviro programs is Garden To Table. A Garden To Table session happens each week, and when we do Garden To Table we split into two groups. One group will be cooking the delicious food for us and the other group will be gardening and harvesting the fresh fruit and vegetables to deliver to the kitchen. Each week we pick different foods from different countries to cook.

In the kitchen we have to read the enjoyable recipes super carefully so we can grab the right ingredients and don’t get mistaken by similar looking ingredients, such as sugar and salt. We also have to measure the right amount of ingredients for the right exquisite taste. In the kitchen we learnt to use measuring cups, pans, pots, graters, knives, peelers, scales, ovens and blenders. Since maths and reading are the traditional subjects we need to practice, we also learn maths and reading by measuring and reading the recipes. Cooking with all parts of banana (banana skin muffins) can also show us zero waste in the kitchen.

Outside in the garden we plant vegetables and fruit alongside doing some composting and digging. All of the vegetables and fruits that we used are freshly picked from the garden at the field. We do lots of planting and picking weeds. We also learnt how to plant strawberry runners. Our vegetables that we have in our garden are pumpkins, silverbeet, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbages, carrots, corns, feijoas, strawberry, and much more. We also have many types of flowers.

We have an amazing bee hive at our school and a fascinating chicken coop at our school too. The eggs that we use comes from our chickens  Ginger Ninja, Dusty, Betsy and Violet. Our luscious honey that we use comes from our bees in the beehive at the field.

We cook different recipes. Our salad menu is the imaginary salad. It has many vegetables from our gardens in it, and that is not just a plain green salad. It had some colourful ingredients to it as well and those are our edible flowers like Calendulas and Salvia elegans ( pineapple sage ). For dessert we had muffins, apple or pear crumbles and much more from different countries.

We have a lovely pizza oven at our school and is decorated with mosaic tiles. We cook pizza during the last week of Garden To Table. We get to cook different types of pizzas and they are delicious.

We love Garden to table at our school and we think that other schools should get this opportunity to participate in this program. We would like you to help other schools join in with this program. It would be wonderful for you to come and visit our amazing school, taste our delicious food from Garden To Table and to learn more about our brilliant school and programs we have here. Thank you.

Yours Sincerely,
Licha Room 8
